Hanging on

Posted in Eco-Conscious, Playing House on November 8th, 2008 by nicole

I think this belongs in my study. One always needs fresh oxygen while working, right?
This one just works because there is not a chance of soil stains on my carpet!
The Boskke Sky Planter hangs upside down and has an internal reservoir system that prevents dripping and minimizes the need to water but once a month. For those of us with a bit of a brown thumb this is perfect!Image via Outblush

Spining Around

I think this might go nicely in my office and great against the newly decided green backdrop I will be painting this weekend.

This Week in Food

Posted in Food Fun, Playing House on September 16th, 2008 by nicole
There are so many great products that I have been seeing… mainly on Outblush. Here is a recap of my favorites!
Handpresso – of course this made the rounds last week. I do not drink coffee (it makes my hands shaky), but I love the idea of not hitting up a Starbucks for every shot of caffeine. $155 at Charles and Marie

Next is the honey flutes – oh my goodness, I would feel so swanky pouring my honey out of a white wine bottle. Beautiful for holiday gift baskets to pass out to clients and family alike. $25 from Acacia.

I am loving the precut brownie pan from Amazon. Brilliant and a little bit of a portion control device too! Plus the bottom falls out like a cheesecake pan so you are sure to get the perfect brownie every time. $25

A crazy indulgence that I doubt I would ever need (until there were little ones running around asking for gourmet peanut butter) a Peanut Butter machine! $50 from The Lighter Side, keep 2 cups of your favorite nuts and set to crunchy or smooth and out comes peanut butter!
Finally – the Eatsmart nutrition scale for all of this yummy stuff. Measures the weight, fiber calories and more of the food. Yikes! $75 at Think Geek.

Grrr… Dissapointment

Posted in Cool Threads, Playing House on September 3rd, 2008 by nicole

This weekend we indulged and purchased a king size bed. Conveniently the old one went into a guest bedroom. I loved the linens we had… it took me 6 months to find the perfect bedding well before we even met, but I did it. Luxury and serenity. That is what bedding is supposed to be.

Now, we have a bigger bed. That means we need new bed linens. Boo. I do not want to wait for 6 months (it will get cold!) and I thought we liked this bedding from Macy’s. Turns out it is more steel in color than a dark navy blue (which is what I was hoping for).
Anyone know of anything fantastic (that is not an outrageous $2000) in a navy blue with a luxurious feeling to it? I was totally down in the dumps to come home empty handed today.

Terrific Textures

Wow.
I was perusing Oh Joy! and saw her post on these wonderful leather cut fabrics applied to furniture.
If I were a fabulous person – I would own something like this by UK designer Helen Amy Murray. Absolutely amazing.image via Oh Joy!

Announcements for Moving

Posted in Playing House, Pretty Paper, calligrapher for hire on August 27th, 2008 by nicole

Well, everything is finally in and we have hot water. It is official, I am a homeowner!

The announcments went to the post yesterday and I have pictures.
I used my chandelier stamp from Paper Nosh. Embossed with brown embossing powder on my moss and chocolate card stock from Paper Source.
Everything went into a handmade envelope using maps from an old atlas and the return address is from my PSA stamper (a small shortcut in the end).

The lettering is in Citadel and Italic in brown ink.

Numbers on Display

Posted in Gifts Galore, Playing House, Wonderous Weddings on August 12th, 2008 by nicole

I get asked to do table numbers for weddings quite often and while I love calligraphy, this is one area where I do think there are so many possibilities to have fun. Should the venue permit fire… I adore these sparkler numbers. Slow burning and shaped like a number you are sure to leave an impression on your guests. I think maybe I might want to get some of these for our house warming party to make sure our guests know exactly where they are going (now to just get around the fireworks ban inside the city limits, hmmm). Available at sea and jae for $5.00 per sparkler.

Coaster for the Typophilliac

Posted in Fantastic Furniture, Playing House on August 6th, 2008 by nicole

Design Crush posted about these fantastic coasters she saw on swissmiss (a new read for me!).
I have seen earrings like this at my Kaligrafos meetings, but the coasters are something made for me.
Love them, they might have to go in my new studio.image via Design Crush

Eco Move?

Posted in Eco-Conscious, Playing House, Pretty Paper, gadget geek on July 19th, 2008 by nicole

So, I have been thinking about moving recently and all of the waste that joins me in that process. Boxes, bubble wrap, tissue, tape, gas (diesel), carbon emissions etc…
In regards to the bubble wrap and tissue issue, I found a great solution that I have used through several moves in college – towels and clothes. Of course, less mass to move because you are using your belongings to cushion the fragile objects! No extra packaging material that you pull out to get to the real stuff and it is already in your possession! Yay.image via Derwent House
The tape issue is still one I have not quite figured out, I think I will have to give on that one because I have so much trouble with the whole interlocking flaps on lids thing. Okay in some situations, but does not give me enough piece of mind for security for everything.
In regards to the boxes there are several options that I found on-line. First is earthfriendlymoving, they deliver your Recopack: the plastic boxes and you get to pack them, stack them, move them and then the company comes to pick the boxes back up. The great thing is the you rent the box for $1/week, they are recycled and delivery/pick up is done in a truck run off of vegetable oil. Bad news for me, they are only in SoCal at this time.Next one is Eco Box based in the Austin area. They buy and sell recycled cardboard boxes and packaging supplies. Not a bad idea for those of use who cannot use plastic boxes for everything. In regards to the emissions problem, there is always the option to move by bicycle! And I have one that I love :-) Too bad I am probably not strong enough to pedal the 10 hilly miles from my home with a sofa dragging behind me. Check out Portland Carfree Day where they have an article on how to move by bicycle and Michael Bluejay’s site as he has moved several times by bicycle. In regards to practical reduction of emissions: Ford and U-Haul have partnered to use lowVoc paints on their trucks that start the reduction process. Yay!Finally, there is New York based Move Like a Celebrity. They use bio-diesel vans, use recycled materials and plant 10 trees with every move. Not and option for me based on location, boo.

I guess right now the best thing to do is buy a Tesla and try to squeeze my sofa on top :-)
