So, I have been thinking about moving recently and all of the waste that joins me in that process. Boxes, bubble wrap, tissue, tape, gas (diesel), carbon emissions etc…
In regards to the bubble wrap and tissue issue, I found a great solution that I have used through several moves in college – towels and clothes. Of course, less mass to move because you are using your belongings to cushion the fragile objects! No extra packaging material that you pull out to get to the real stuff and it is already in your possession! Yay.

The tape issue is still one I have not quite figured out, I think I will have to give on that one because I have so much trouble with the whole interlocking flaps on lids thing. Okay in some situations, but does not give me enough piece of mind for security for everything.
In regards to the boxes there are several options that I found on-line. First is earthfriendlymoving, they deliver your Recopack: the plastic boxes and you get to pack them, stack them, move them and then the company comes to pick the boxes back up. The great thing is the you rent the box for $1/week, they are recycled and delivery/pick up is done in a truck run off of vegetable oil. Bad news for me, they are only in SoCal at this time.
Next one is Eco Box based in the Austin area. They buy and sell recycled cardboard boxes and packaging supplies. Not a bad idea for those of use who cannot use plastic boxes for everything.
In regards to the emissions problem, there is always the option to move by bicycle! And I have one that I love :-) Too bad I am probably not strong enough to pedal the 10 hilly miles from my home with a sofa dragging behind me. Check out Portland Carfree Day where they have an article on how to move by bicycle and Michael Bluejay’s site as he has moved several times by bicycle.
In regards to practical reduction of emissions: Ford and U-Haul have partnered to use lowVoc paints on their trucks that start the reduction process. Yay!
Finally, there is New York based Move Like a Celebrity. They use bio-diesel vans, use recycled materials and plant 10 trees with every move. Not and option for me based on location, boo.
I guess right now the best thing to do is buy a Tesla and try to squeeze my sofa on top :-)
